The Name
“Otium” , Latin for ‘idleness’, has been chosen in connection with the ancient Greeks’ belief: self-improvement was the only dynamic able to guarantee greater social cohesion, the stability of institutions and economic prosperity. The ancient Greeks recognised the benefits of seeking harmony through nurturing the soul with art and beauty in all its forms, taking care of and elevating both body and spirit.
In one concept, it could be expressed as the Art of Not Doing.
They believed that ‘otium’ - the Art of Not Doing - was the instrument necessary for raising the consciousness of all men, thus, leading to greater freedom.
